Aoi & the Mandarin Oriental Shop@ Emporium - 04.12.11

My first celebration of 2011 Songkran holiday started off at Aoi @ Emporium.  People asked me if I wasn't afraid of the radioactive leakage from the Earthquake incidents in Japan that will contaminate the food.  The answer is both yes, and no.  Yes, we are aware of the leakage and No, I think it should be fine.  Food for exporting should pass many inspections before arriving to us, therefore, I think if the radioactive level is that high, then we shouldn't see it in the market.
Let's get started.  My first dish was Sunomono Moriawase.    Shrimps, octopus, some fish sashimi with thinly slice cucumber and seaweed in a slightly sweet vinegar. This dish is a good appetizer, it was light and so refreshing.
Our second dish was Hotate Cream Korokke - deep fried scallop cream croquette.  This dish was served with the special katsu sauce and the dressing for the side-dish salad.   After you break the wall of crispy flour, inside, you'll see the creamy sauce and 2 big chunks of Hotate.  Very smooth taste for this dish.  I love it even without the sauce.

Next was the Tempura Moriawase - 2 shrimp tempura with assorted veggies served with traditional hot sauce with the turnip and the special salt.  The tempura batter was well prepared, it was crispy and not too oily.

I can't finish a trip to Aoi without having Sashimi.  And with a slightly afraid of the radioactive leakage, I compressed my order from the big Sashimi dish to just an a la carte small dish, just to complete the day.  I decided to order a dish of Kampachi.

The last one, we ordered Hokkai Kamemashi - a set of hot bowl of Salmon and Salmon Roe over rice, served with a big set of one deep fried dish, one steamed dish, one other side dish and steamed egg with clear soup.  A really big set, and I have to admit that I've never be able to finish this set myself  :)   I always shared the rice between two to three people.  This rice pot is our family favorite, all the children in my family love this dish, especially they have to find and look for the gems (the Salmon Roe) when they are having this dish, give them a joyful eating experience.

After the meal dessert, Japanese melon was served.  It's served cold, so refreshing.  We love it!!

Since we're at the Emporium, we had a little shopping and then came the coffee time.  We decided to sit down at the Mandarin Oriental Shop for a drink and some dessert.  I ordered Creme Brule.  It was so nice after the long walk, to have this creamy, and smooth dessert.

And of course, my favorite cup - a cup of cappucino.  I expected the better foaming from the Oriental Shop.  A bit disappointing, but not that bad, overall.
